Maybe
this year?
Every year
Cubs fans say the same thing… there’s always next year. With more curses than a
Samuel L. Jackson movie, its no surprise the Wrigley faithful are never
optimistic about the current season. But this year might be different.
Last season
the Cubs showed that their offense could put runs on the board. The young
talent they have in Rizzo and Castro give Cubs fans something to cheer for
every game. Even the young outfielder Arismendy Alcantara showed signs that he
is ready to play hardball with the big boys. One thing position the team is
lacking significantly is their pitching and losing Jeff Samardzija did not help
that situation. To make up for this weakness the Cubs front office made one big
move already and possibly a second in the works.
Signing Joe
Maddon was the smartest move the Cubs front office could make. Maddon has
turned relievers that everybody thought were at the end of their carriers and
turned them into All-Star caliber closers. As a manager he is one of the best,
knowing what player to put where and when. The second move that keeps floating
around the rumor mill is their interest in Russell Martin. Not only is Martin
the best catcher in free agency, he’s one of the top 3 catchers in the league.
His offense is a touch above par in terms of catchers, but his ability to call
a game and handle a pitching staff is rivaled only by Yadi Molina.
Both Maddon
and Martin will dramatically help their pitching without having to sign a big
name free agent like Jon Lester or Max Scherzer. I do believe the Cubs need to acquire
a pitcher so look for them to make a bid for Cole Hamels or Ervin Santana.
